The Indigo and Super-Psychic Kids Are Here

The first time I heard about the "Indigo Children" was from a man named Drunvalo. This was in 1998 and to tell you the truth, his story was quite difficult to believe at the time. He told me of children who were highly telepathic, psychic, who had the ability to see past our everyday illusions, and who even had a different genetic structure from most people and carried what are called crystalline energies. He believes that these children will eventually link their consciousnesses through the new mode of heart communication. Well, obviously this idea could stir up a quagmire of debate, but what's not open for debate are the studies of more than 50 research scientists with hard data to back them up.

First of all, I must confess that I have lots of emotion around this subject. When I was working with adolescents with behavior problems going through a drug- and alcohol-recovery program, I recognized some strong similarities to the Indigo Children, especially in those who were diagnosed with ADDH (attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity). I started realizing right away that these kids had most of the same behaviors as the Indigo Children, such as attention deficit and impatience; they opposed authority, especially when it was in direct conflict with what they saw as common sense (I might add that I agreed with them), they had a very low tolerance for stupidity in others, and they simply had a difficult time understanding what we would define as reality. This would make a story unto itself, but suffice it to say that once we understand more thoroughly what's going on with Indigo Children, we will be able to reassess what we are doing with our kids.

But for now I want to focus on the story of the Indigo Children. First of all, don't think for a moment that this is a new phenomenon . In his epic poem, Savitri, Sri Aurobindo (1872-1950) has this to say: "Into the fallen human sphere they came, Faces that wore the Immortal's glory still . . .High priests of wisdom, sweetness, might, and bliss; Their tread one day shall change the suffering earth, And justify the light on Nature's face" (pp. 343-344). And more recently, they have appeared on Oprah . Omni and Nature , both prestigious magazines, did extensive articles on the Indigo and super-psychic children being born into our world.

In a groundbreaking book, The Indigo Children: The New Kids Have Arrived , Lee Carroll and Jan Tober document much of the research done before 1999 on Indigo Children. They describe these children as "children who display a new and unusual set of psychological attributes." I'm sure many of you parents out there are paying attention now. Unfortunately, traditional educational systems aren't equipped to properly educate some of these children. Schools such as the Waldorf, Montessori, and Rainbow Kids Integral School that are more cutting-edge (larger budgets also help) than traditional schools are developing a curriculum that allows for the special gifts of these children. What they are finding time after time is that once these "problem" children are placed in educational systems that understand what's going on, they excel. These are brilliant children who simply get bored to death in some of our school systems. Teachers who have to deal with overcrowded classes and underbudgeted curricula know all too well what I'm talking about.

So you ask, "What can we do?" It's called community/global awareness, being conscious of what's going on in our world, even when it doesn't fit in with our old worldviews, or maybe I should say, especially when it doesn't fit in. As most of us know, our old world model is disintegrating rapidly anyway. So in these troubled times when we tend to see everything that disturbs us as a problem, maybe we should see some of our troubled kids for what they are, a blessing and a gift who are simply reflecting back to us the reality that we've created. If this is so, then we can create another reality with their help. But first, we need to be aware of what's really going on with the "new kids that have arrived."
